Stevia is a natural sweetener with a glycemic index of ZERO! It’s very, very sweet (up to 300 times sweeter than sugar), and tastes best mixed in foods, I think, rather than standing alone sweetening tea, for example.
Stevia is a plant with 'sweet' leaves from which the powdered form is made (you can buy it in little packets); you can also grow your own! Used traditionally for centuries in South America, in the past few decades it has been developed into a 'natural alternative' to chemical artificial sweeteners.
Recently, stevia has been trademarked, and is being used in the US in sodas, and bottled teas...studies have revealed some health benefits, too, so expect to see a lot more of it in the coming years. |
